Ahead of Eurovision, Israel Distributes Iron Dome throughout the Country

Iron Dome Israel
The Israeli military deployed Iron Dome missile defense systems throughout the country ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest which will begin this weekend. The defense weapon was a mainstay when the Jewish-majority country was bombarded with nearly 700 rockets from Gaza, Palestine.

According to the Haaretz newspaper on Tuesday (05/14/2019), missile batteries designed to intercept incoming projectiles have been deployed throughout the country amid security concerns.

Last Monday, Israel and the Palestinians agreed to a ceasefire following a brief battle that killed four Israelis and 25 Palestinians.

Although the ceasefire was approved, the US Embassy in Israel warned of the potential for rocket attacks during the Eurovision Song Contest.

"Terrorist groups can vote for the anniversary, which coincides with the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv to carry out violent protests or attacks," the US Embassy said in a security warning sent earlier this week.

"Security incidents can occur further outside Gaza and its periphery and at any time," the embassy continued warning.

Last week, militant groups in Gaza claimed the Iron Dome system was defeated by a barrage of their rockets and raised public questions about the effectiveness of the multi-million dollar defense system.

Invasion of hundreds of rockets for two days, May 4-5, also left nearly 200 Israelis injured. According to Haaretz, Iron Dome only managed to intercept or intercept 240 of the approximately 690 rockets from Gaza that entered.

The report triggered fears of Iro Dome's failure in the event of an attack during Eurovision.

Israel has the right to host the contest after Israeli singer Netta Barzilai brought a prize last year with her pop song "Toy".

As a measure to anticipate security problems, the committee decided to hold a contest in Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem which has been declared the capital of the country. Tel Aviv is known for its beaches and the lifestyle of its gay community.

However, the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement against Israel led by Palestine, began asking the contestants to come out of the Eurovision Song Contest for Israel's treatment of Palestine.

Dozens of European artists, led by former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, signed a letter calling for the contest to be moved elsewhere.

The situation is increasingly tense because the contest coincides with the day Palestinians commemorate the "Nakba Day", the day when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were driven out of their homes in the 1948 war which led to the establishment of the state of Israel.

A number of demonstrations to mark the day of mourning and protesting Eurovision are planned throughout the country and in the Palestinian territories.

Yesterday a Eurovision billboard protesting the Israeli occupation of the West Bank was established near Ben Gurion International Airport.

Israeli Media Leaks 'Deal of Century', Contents of Establishment of 'New Palestine'

Hebrew-language Israeli media, Hayom, issued a leaked document on the plans of US President Donald Trump for the Middle East, which was called the "Deal of Century" or "Deal of the Century". One of the main points of the plan is the establishment of a "New Palestine" state with the West Bank and Gaza.

The leaked document was sourced from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The US previously said it would reveal a "Deal of Century" after the month of Ramadan ended or at the beginning of June 2019.

The main points of the agreement were actually formulated by Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner — who had wide interest in Israel and his settlements. Here are some important points from the "Deal of Century" draft of the Trump government quoted by Middle East Monitor, Thursday (05/09/2019);

1. A tripartite agreement will be signed between Israel, the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) and Hamas, and a Palestinian state will be formed which will be called "New Palestine". The country will be established in the West Bank and Gaza, with the exception of settlements.

2. Israel will gradually release Palestinian prisoners for three years under an agreement.

3. Block settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are illegal under international law, will become part of Israel.

4. Jerusalem will not be divided, but will be divided by Israel and "New Palestine" with Israel maintaining control in general.

5. Palestinians living in Jerusalem will become citizens of a Palestinian state but Israel will remain responsible for the municipality and therefore its land.

6. The newly formed Palestinian state will pay taxes to the Israeli city government to take responsibility for education in the city for Palestinians.

7. The status quo on holy sites will remain and Israeli Jews will not be allowed to buy Palestinian homes and vice versa.

8. Egypt will offer new Palestinian state land to build airports, factories and agriculture that will serve the Gaza Strip.

9. A highway will be built to connect the Gaza Strip to the West Bank 30 meters above Israel. Funding for this project will mainly come from China, which will finance 50 percent with South Korea, Australia, Canada, the US and the European Union each financing ten percent.

10. The United States, European Union and Gulf countries will fund and sponsor a five-year agreement to establish a "New Palestine" state.

11. The establishment of the new country will cost USD 6 billion per year, of which 70 percent will be paid by the Gulf countries. Whereas the US contributes 20 percent and the European Union ten percent.

12. "New Palestinian" countries will not be allowed to form an army, but may defend police forces. Instead, a defense agreement will be signed between Israel and "New Palestine", in which Israel will defend the new country from foreign attacks.

13. After signing the agreement, Hamas will hand over all of its weapons to Egypt. The leaders of the movement will be compensated and paid by Arab countries when the "New Palestinian" government is established.

14. Elections are expected to be held within one year after the establishment of the "New Palestine" state.

15. All borders between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and Israel will remain open to people and goods and Palestinians will be able to use Israeli airspace and ports.

16. "New Palestine" will have two crossings to Jordan, and the crossing will be under the control of the "New Palestinian" authority.

17. The Jordan Valley will remain in Israeli hands and a four-lane highway will be built through it.

18. If Hamas or Palestinian bodies reject this agreement, the US will cancel all of its financial support to Palestine and pressure other countries to do the same.

19. If, on the other hand, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signs the agreement but Hamas and Islamic Jihad disagree, war will be launched in the Gaza Strip with full US support.

20. However, if Israel rejects the agreement, the US will stop its financial support. The US is currently paying USD3.8 billion a year to support Israel.
